History

On August 1, 1996, institutional structure changes resulted in the renaming of the division from "China Research Division" to "Third Research Division". Prior to this, it had gone through three different time periods – "Association for International Relations", "Institute of International Relations", and "Center for International Relations". Due to each time period's historical background, the missions and tasks undertaken under each period were distinct from one another. Under the "Association for International Relations" and the "Institute of International Relations" time periods, the division belonged under the aforementioned bodies as the "China Intelligence Research Division". In 1985, the "Institute of International Relations" changed its name to "Center for International Relations." After its incorporation into National Chengchi University, the division was renamed "China Studies Division". Because of the increasing research interest both in the domestic and international arena toward China, and aiming to strengthen research in the field, the division changed its name from "China Studies Division" to "Third Research Division" (doing research on laws and politics of China) on August 1, 1996. When the division was still called "China Intelligence Research Division", the succession of chairmen were as follows: from Mr. Yao Mengxuan, Mr. Li Tianmin, Mr. Yin Qingyao, Mr. Zhu Wenlin, Mr. Wang Xuewen, Mr. Zhang Zhenbang, Mr. Ye Botang, and Mr. Wu Anjia. Members generally came from three backgrounds - first were those who experienced the Chinese Civil War (e.g. Mr. Li Tianmin, Professor Zhaqi Siyin, Mr. Yin Qingyao, and Mr. Zhu Wenlin); second were those who were imprisoned during the Chinese Civil War (e.g. Mr. Guo Hualun, Mr. Yao Mengxuan, and Mr. Liu Maonan); and third were youths who received their education from Taiwanese universities (e.g. Mr. Zhang Hu, Mr. Li Boquan, and Mr. Sun Zhenfang). Under the cooperation of these three groups of people, the "China Intelligence Research Division" received recognition from the government for their policy research. Mr. Yuan Yi serving as the current director.
