Medium to long-term development plan

1.On the basis of existing research foundations, to commit to developing the division's uniqueness and to actively recruit and train new research talent The division's future plans include the development of three main research fields, while at the same time integrating them into existing academic fields, which could be one of the division's distinguishing feature. The division's future plans include the development of three main research fields, while at the same time integrating them into existing academic fields, which could be one of the division's distinguishing feature. These fields are the development of China’s democratization and legalization processes, Chinese political transition and its integration under economic globalization, and patterns of China's co-evolution with international politics and strategic security and their mutual influence on each other. Under these distinguishing features, the division aims to garner support not only from the University but also from all circles of society in order to attract new research talent and minimize the increasing demands and openings for researchers. In terms of long-term plans, the division aims to develop and strengthen its research on various national and international research fields in order to solidify its position and further ensure its irreplaceability. 2.To strengthen research resources and increase research standards The focus of strengthening research resources is to expand exchanges, to raise research funds and to improve library equipment. This encourages the division's research fellows to integrate with the international academic community, and to be a leader in their own research field. 3.To establish a research group and strengthen collective research In coordination with the University, the division utilizes its research fellow's specialization combined with specializations of research fellows from other Universities to establish interdisciplinary and inter-university research groups. Currently, the China Politics Research Group and Security Policies Research Group have been formed, with each group composed of members from the division and the institute, research fellows from four departments, National Defense University professors, and academic scholars currently taking their doctorate degrees from US top universities. In the future, the research groups will continuously undergo the following improvements: (1) Division of research topics to be more stringent; (2) Members composing the research group to be more internationalized (including academic scholars from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, USA, among others); (3) Publication of research findings to be regularized (publication of a research book every two to three years); (4) Interaction of the groups to be institutionalized and routinized. 4.To expand academic exchanges and cooperation with Chinese and international academics and scholars In exchanges with China, the division will not only continue to actively participate in the Institution's exchange activities with China, taking advantage of the exchanges to visit China and understand its Taiwan-related policies, security policies, and domestic issues; the division will also consolidate and further expand its own exchange networks with China. The division has a verbal agreement with Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of China regarding academic exchanges, which allows both sides to undertake short-term research. The receiving side will provide logistical support, and the research scholar will shoulder fees incurred. The division will also continue to carry out academic exchanges with academic bodies in China, and advance academic research of both sides. Exchanges will be carried out through the support of Mainland Affairs Council's Chinese Development Fund and China Tide Foundation, and through the visits of Chinese scholars. The division will also develop academic research cooperation with Chinese scholars. In exchanges with the international academic community, the division's medium and long term plans are to use the aforementioned research group as a foundation to fill existing inadequacies and demands of the international academic community, and to create collaborations in order to publish books or journal articles. These will establish the division's position in the international academic community. 5.To cooperate with the University’s Institute of China Studies, and to provide a wide array of services The division's role under its future plans is to cooperate with the University's China Studies Center, to demonstrate the division's wide network and resources, and to provide a wide range of services through the provision of a wide array of books, network resources and consulting services, to organize academic seminars and forums, and to hold a series of academic lectures.
