Previous Exchanges

The division utilizes the abovementioned channels to facilitate academic exchanges. Below are the academic exchanges that have already been carried out: •February 1995, the division’s associate research fellow Yuan Yi accompanied Director Shao Yuming to Beijing. The purpose of the trip was to conduct discussions with Chinese Vice Premier Li Lanqing, Director of Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council Wang Zhaoguo, President of the Association for Relations Across Taiwan Straits (ARATS) Wang Daohan, Vice President of the Association for Relations Across Taiwan Straits (ARATS) Tang Shubei, China Center for International Affairs Director-General Li Luye, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations Director Chen Qurong, and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Institute of Taiwan Studies Deputy Director Yu Keli, among others, with the aim of better understanding the meaning behind Jiang Zemin’s eight-point formula. •In March 1995, the division’s associate research fellow Yuan Yi undertook National Science Council’s research plan. He traveled to Fujian province to visit institutions such as Fujian Local Records Compilation Committee, Fujian Provincial Archives, Fujian Province Rural Development Research Center, and Fujian Province Council of Agriculture. •In October 1996, the division’s associate research fellow Yuan Yi traveled to Zhejiang, Hangzhou, and Shaoxing to attend the second conference on China’s Provinces in Reform. •In April 1998, the division’s associate research fellow Yuan Yi implemented the Asia Foundation’s research program and traveled to Fujian, Fuzhou, Gutian and Guangzhou City. He interviewed officials from Fujian Provincial Civil Affairs Department, Civil Affairs Bureau of Ningde, Gutian County People’s Government, and Guangdong NPC Standing Committee, and observed local village associations. •In August 1998, the division’s associate research fellow Yuan Yi implemented the Asia Foundation’s research program and traveled to Beijing and Shenzhen City to visit the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the Tribune of Villages and Townships magazine, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ Institute of Political Science, Shenzhen City (Pingshan Town, Longgang District) People’s Government, and the Civil Affairs Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality. He also interviewed and visited local village associations. •In October 1998, our institute’s associate research fellow Yuan Yi traveled to Yunnan, Kunming to attend the international conference on China’s Provinces and Cities Under Reform. •In December 1999, the division’s associate research fellow Yuan Yi implemented National Science Council’s research plan and traveled to Beijing to visit the Institute of Taiwan Studies, Institute of American Studies, Institute of World Economy and Politics, College of Diplomacy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the China Institute of International Studies, the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, and the China Defense Science and Technology Information Center. •From September 1999 to August 2000, the division’s associate research fellow Yuan Yi was in Washington, D.C. to interview representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of China, representatives from National Defense University of PLA China, PLA Academy of Military Sciences, China Academy of Social Sciences Institute of American Studies, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, China Institute of International Studies, Xinhua News Agency, and Office of the Defense Attached of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United States of America. • In December 2000, the division’s associate research fellow Yuan Yi implemented National Science Council’s research plan and traveled to Shanghai to visit institutions such as Fudan University’s Center for American Studies and Shanghai Institutes for International Studies. •In 1993 and 1995, the division’s research fellow Ding Shufan visited Shenzhen, Beijing, and Chongqing three times to attend China’s Defense Industry Conversion to Civilian Production exhibition and seminar, to understand the reform situation, and to write about the Conversion under the request of the Mainland Affairs Council. •In 1998, 2000, and 2002, the division’s research fellow Ding Shufan visited China three times to participate in the ISODARCO-Beijing Seminar on Arms Control jointly organized by Italy’s International School on Disarmament and Research on Conflicts (ISODARCO) and China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations. •In 2000, the division's director Ding Shufan together with five other people traveled to China upon the invitation of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Taiwan Studies. The group interacted with academic research institutes and scholars in China, and paid a visit to Vice-Minister of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council PRC Wang Zaixi. •In 1996, the division's research fellow Xiong Zijian went to China under the request of the Mainland Affairs Council to do an on-site research on China's religious groups, religion educational institutions, and to interact with academic research institutions such as Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of World Religions, The Research Institute of the Buddhism Culture of China, and the Jinling Union Theological Seminary. •In 1997, upon the invitation of China Taiwan Research Association, the division's research fellow Xiong Zijian attended the seminar on the implications of Chinese Communist Party's 15 Policies for Taiwan, interacted with Chinese scholars involved in Taiwan research, and paid a visit to Vice-Minister of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council PRC Tang Shubei. •In 1999, upon the invitation of China Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Taiwan Studies, the division's director Xiong Zijian accompanied chairman Shao Yuming to China to visit and interact with academic institutions and scholars in China. At the same time, they paid a visit to Association for Relations Across Taiwan Straits (ARATS) President Wang Daohan and Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council PRC Vice-Minister Tang Shubei. •In 2000, upon the invitation of China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, the division's director Xiong Zijian traveled to China to visit and interact with academic institutions and scholars, and to pay a visit to Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council PRC’s Department of Research Director-General Sun Yafu. •In 2002, the division's director Xiong Zijian together with five other people traveled to China upon the invitation of the Mainland-based Research Center for Relations across the Taiwan Strait. The group interacted with academic research institutes and scholars in China, and paid a visit to Vice-Minister of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council PRC Wang Zaixi. •In 1998, the division invited China Academy of Social Sciences' Vice Dean Liu Guoguang, Institute of American Studies' director Wang Jisi, Institute of Law's research fellow Liu Nanlai, and China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations director Chen Qurong together with research fellow Ding Kuisong to pay a visit to Taiwan. •In 1999, the division invited China Academy of Social Sciences' Dean Xu Shiquan together with four other people to pay a visit to Taiwan. The division was also actively establishing more exchange channels with China.
